Travel Singapore

Given the highly anticipated film “Crazy Rich Asians” opens this week, and is set in Singapore, this felt like the perfect time to revisit the fabulous city.

I have had many friends work in Singapore over the years (as it is a global financial center), and I have always had a wonderful time in the cosmopolitan City. An island city-state off southern Malaysia, it enjoys a tropical climate and multicultural population. Its colonial core centers on the Padang, a cricket field since the 1830s and now flanked by grand buildings such as City Hall, with its 18 Corinthian columns. For many travelers, Singapore is their first introduction to Southeast Asia, and the island nation seems to exist in two worlds at once. When you visit Singapore, the sparkling boutiques and department stores on Orchard Road and the hotels, both historic and new, but Singapore has its exotic elements too – in the shophouses of circa-1820 Chinatown, for instance, as well as the temples of Little India and the city’s night markets. Whether you’re stopping in Singapore en route to other parts of Asia or are making it the only stop on your journey, you’ll be greatly rewarded if you delve beneath the city’s spotless surface and get to know the real Singapore.
